Vietnamese Students Association Welcome Party - 21st July 2019
The Vietnamese Students Association have been affiliated with NUSA for two years now. The sun was out on a winter Sunday as they hosted a welcome party in the NUSA building and at the Park on the Hill. They cooked Vietnamese food on the BBQ and played traditional Vietnamese music for friends, family and guests.
Twilight Markets - 28th May 2019
This instalment of our Twilight Markets was held under the stars at Park on the Hill. They featured an abundance of baked goods, medieval sword fighting demonstrations, original art and live music. Check out the video below for the highlights.
Mental Health Day 2019
What do you get when you cross a BBQ, rescue dogs and a drag lip sync and poi performance? Mental Health Day that’s what! There were also reps from NUPSA, the NTEU, Lifeline and the NUSA Queer Collective educating UoN students on Mental Health issues, providing care packages and just generally giving people some good feels.
Live Performances at the NUSA BBQ
NUSA Tuesday BBQs not only have veggie patties this year, but we are featuring live music by a different artist every week. We kicked off the first of our NUSA BBQs with the beautiful sounds of local artist Gymea. Aaron White armed himself with a voice and a guitar and provided a great accompaniment to a free meal. This week, The Dew Cats crooned sweet tunes with Gypsy Jazz vibes and gave the Park on the Hill a fresh dose of mellow.
Bangladesh Independence Day - Tuesday 26th March 2019
The Bangladesh Students Association at UoN celebrated their Independence Day alongside the NUSA BBQ with beautiful singing and free food. A good day was had by all.
Harmony Day - Thursday 21st March 2019
The weather was great, the food was amazing and music and culture beautifully filled the space that was the Park on the Hill for the 2019 Harmony Day celebration. There was a Yidaki performance from Ray Kelly Jnr, A Weaving Workshop with Aunty Daniella and dance performances from the Wollotuka Indigenous Dance Group, the Latin America Society, Hip Hop Society and Bangladesh Students Society. As well as this, music from around the world was immersed with food from 12 different cultures. There were heartfelt speeches given by International Students and UoN staff - recognising the need to support each other, no matter what culture you represent. The UoN students, staff and visiting children really got involved and caught a glimpse at how possible it is to embrace diversity in a positive way.
Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance Week Expo - Tuesday 12th March 2019
The Park on the Hill hosted UoN’s super fun, informative, sex-positive and judgement-free SHAG Week Expo on Tuesday. There was even the opportunity for a free, confidential STI check-up at the ‘Pee and flee’ stand, and students had the chance to win tickets to Groovin the Moo and The Drop festivals!
International Women’s Day Celebration - Thursday 7th March 2019
International Women’s Day celebrations at the Park on the Hill had a strong cultural theme this year. Aunty Daniella was back with her Indigenous Weaving Workshop, Heather Price entertained all with her beautiful voice, there were traditional dances by women from around the world, cooking classes with Cherub and a traditional flower arranging ceremony that topped off the day!
O Week - 15th till 22nd February 2019
Orientation came around again at both Callaghan and New Space campuses. NUSA was there - representing our clubs and collectives, handing out goody bags and letting the new students know about our great services.
Res Fest BBQ - 11th February 2019
The new residents at UoN got a taste of their first BBQ of the year at the Park on the Hill. Zooper Doopers, Veggie Patties and Snags were consumed in plentiful amounts!
Stress Less - Tuesday 23rd October 2018
It was a hot one at the Park on the Hill and those few students who weren’t stressing over upcoming exams and assignment due dates were patting dogs, eating sausages and wetting each other with sponges and water pistols! A good day was had by all involved.
Mental Health Day - Tuesday 9th October 2018
As October is Mental Health month in NSW, NUSA hosted activities to promote positive mental health and well-being and reduce the stigma associated with mental health. In conjunction with the lunchtime BBQ - stalls, music, art and colouring books adorned the Park on the Hill. Christy, the NUSA president, even brought her dogs to cuddle!
Twilight Markets - 20th September 2018
The Twilight Markets were back in September, this time at New Space and run in conjunction with the Energise Event for Enterprise and Innovation month. All the usual suspects were there - displaying and selling art, food, fashion and music!
RU OK? Day - Thursday 13th September 2018
R U Ok? Day highlights the importance of mental health awareness and suicide prevention in Australia and around the world. NUSA hosted an art exhibition in the Hunter building to highlight the talents of UoN students and open comunication up around these issues. For more information about R U OK? The Moveable Feast - Friday 7th September 2018
The Moveable Feast, designed and implemented by Amber Sauni (PhD Candidate and all round legend) was installed at Honeysuckle on Friday as part of the Honeysuckle Placemaking Project. NUSA, NUPSA and the School of Architecture collaborated on the launch and Cherub was there with her Cooking Class that has now gone portable!
The Moveable Feast is a portable and re-configurable system that is equipped with an edible garden, cold running water, stove elements and a BBQ. It will be in various locations in Honeysuckle over the next three months for anyone to use.
Pride Party - Friday 31st August 2018
Pride Party was a huge success and a great way to round out Pride Week at UoN! There were drag performers, rainbow confetti, great tunes by DJ Pure Blonde and general merriment by all!
Pride Carnival - Tuesday 28th August 2018
Carnival Day was a big success for the Queer Collective and the LGBTIQA+ community at UoN! Colours adorned the Park on the Hill with music, face painting, dancers and bouncy rides providing entertainment, while sausages, veggies, popcorn and lollies filled hungry mouths. There was representation from the the NUSA Queer Collective, the NUSA Indigenous Collective, the NUSA Women's Collective, HeadSpace, Hunter Gender Alliance, ACON, Pacific Clinic and the Quidditch Society. All in all it was a great day for the uni in recognition of the diverse campus culture!
Pride Week - Flag Raising - Monday 27th August 2018
Despite the gloomy weather, the Philadelphia flag was raised at UoN today to mark the beginning of Pride Week! To mark the occasion there were heartfelt speeches given by Ollie Cook (NUSA Queer Convenor), Barrie Shannon (NUPSA GLBTI Representative) and Astrid Gearin (UoN Equity and Diversity Coordinator).
Twilight Markets - 30th May 2018
The Twilight Markets on the 30th May were a big success! The rain loomed large, and the location was changed to the Brennan Room, but despite this the festivities ensued. There was music, food, dancing and workshops. Stay tuned for Twilight Markets 2.0 later this year!
